Flat Out Under Pressure 24-Hour Art-Making Competition 2023

I participated in the Flat Out Under Pressure 24-Hour art-making competition this year in Greenville, SC and it was so much fun (a LOT of work, but worth it!). My mixed media fiber art piece included punch needled yarn, rug hooked fabric strips, and needle felted wool fiber. I’ve participate for several years in a row but this is by far the largest piece I’ve attempted for this competition (and I was really pushing my luck to finish on time).

The piece is about 20" in diameter, featuring a scene inspired by Lake Jocassee, here in the upstate of South Carolina. The finish piece, along with all of the incredible work made by 100+ other local artists is now on display at Metropolitan Arts Council in downtown Greenville, SC and will eventually be available on my website.

Hope you enjoy the process video!

Flat Out Under Pressure Art Competition 2022

Every year in Greenville, SC the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) hosts an event that brings all the local artists out of the woodwork within this community. 150 artists competed this year, some professional some amateur, all very talented. Between 9 and 11 am on Friday, all artists must get their worksurfaces stamped (you can do up to 5 surfaces but in the end only one piece can be submitted), then you have 24 hours to create a piece of art.

The following morning we all bring our pieces back to MAC in downtown Greenville, and their doors close for most of the day while they install all of the finished pieces inside the gallery for judging. That evening, the party and awards ceremony takes place, and it’s always so impressive to see what others created during the same time period.

This year my piece was a 20x20 mixed media fiber art landscape featuring a farm at dusk and I used needle felted wool roving, punch needled yarn, and rug hooked fabric strips. A piece this size normally takes 3-4 days, but I was able to get it done on time (though it was an extremely full day and yes, my wrists still hurt)!

Hope you enjoy the process video from my 2022 piece, and if you missed my post from 2020, here’s a look back at a past submission to the competition: http://www.sarahmandell.com/blog/flat-out-under-pressure-competition

Water Towers & Waterfalls

Coming May 1, 2022, a 2-part series featuring water towers and waterfalls, all needle felted in wool fiber. Although many of the scenes are from my home city of Greenville, SC, several pieces are inspired by other southern mill towns elsewhere and water falls a bit further north. The rushing water is the whole reason these towns exist; it's what brought the industry and the people here. The waterfalls remain constant, slowing during the dry season and raging after the rains, while the water towers rust in place, a reminder of what used to be.

This series has been on my brain for some time - I’ve certainly needle felted both waterfalls and water towers many times over the years, but both always present a challenge when needle felting. Water falls are almost too simple, and it’s almost too easy to mess them up by adding too much wool fiber or overworking the thin layers of wool representing the veil of water. Water towers on the other hand are extremely complicated. The thin lines of the structure are asking a lot of those wool fibers, plus there’s a lot shading required in order to make the tower appear cylindrical, which is tricky to do in this medium.

Are your walls full, or you’re not ready to commit to a piece of art for your home? I’ve got you covered! Both the water tower and waterfall theme carry over into my hand painted jewelry line. The water tower silhouette is available in my running line in your choice of background color, but the new waterfall landscape pendants are new and extremely limited edition. Only a dozen of these beauties are up for grabs!

All pieces will be available at www.onceagainsam.com starting May 1 and I hope you enjoy this sneak peek of the new collection! Newsletter subscribers will get first dibs on the new collection (plus a coupon) so if you’d like to get added to the list, I’d love to keep in touch: http://www.sarahmandell.com/newsletter

Wonders of Wool Exhibition

I’m thrilled to team up with fellow fiber artist Cecilia Ho for a joint exhibition at the Metropolitan Arts Council gallery now through February 18th. Cecilia and I are both self-taught and although we work in the same medium and have a few techniques in common, our work is very different. I love how the exact same materials can yield totally different results!

The opening reception is Friday January 21st from 6:30-9 at the gallery (16 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC). All are welcome! There will be food, wine and other refreshments, and Cecilia and I would love to meet you and share our work with you.

About the show:

Wool is all around us. It’s in our closets, our blankets, our shoe insoles, and even the insulation in our homes. This incredible natural material has been used for centuries for a wide range of practical solutions, but in this joint exhibition Cecilia Ho and Sarah Mandell explore the material purely for its beauty. With 25 years of combined fiber art experience, Ho and Mandell use needle felting, wet felting, nuno felting with silk fabric, rug hooking and punch needle techniques to create 2D and 3D work inspired by all aspects of nature.

Enjoy this sneak peek virtual tour of the gallery!

New Year, New Studio

Greetings from my new studio! After nearly a month offline, I’m finally set up in my new workspace and it’s a dream come true. This dream has been many years in the making. For the last 9 years I’ve had my workspace spread out over 4.5 rooms and a storage unit, and while it certainly worked fine for a long time and allowed my business to grow from a hobby to a near-full time gig, it wasn’t ideal for my workflow.

My husband and I closed on a house this fall, started renovating it immediately, but I left my studio untouched because it was my busy season - the holiday rush is not the time to shut down! Once my Christmas cutoff date passed, I started packing up my supplies and implementing my plans for the new space.

One of the big reasons we chose this house was the studio space, which is a one bedroom apartment over the garage. It’s attached to the house, so I can still come up in my slippers and start working while I finish my morning Earl Gray, but it’s separate enough that I can “leave” work at the end of the day and I don’t have to see shipping supplies or inventory bins while going about the rest of my life.

The 800 square foot apartment needed some work, and there’s many things I’ll update / change out in the future once my bank account recovers from the initial renovations, but as of this week, I’m officially moved in and open for business once again. It feels so good! The natural light is amazing, the view of the cows and chickens across the road is still very exciting and novel to me, I’m thrilled to have heating and air (and running water!) in my laser room for the first time, and I love love love having ALL of my workspaces in one space. It’s so efficient! I’m now able to laser cut, paint, assemble jewelry, do computer stuff, store inventory, photograph things, pack and ship all in my studio apartment. I feel so grown up.

Before moving in, we had the popcorn ceiling scraped, textured walls sanded and painted, new carpet installed, got new sub panel and outlets for my equipment, and put up new light fixtures. I was able to reuse almost all of my existing studio furniture and only had to replace one desk since it wasn’t the right size.

In the future I plan to replace the green tile floors in the shipping area and bathroom, replace the doors to the deck, get new countertops, and add a few can lights, plus little odds and ends like dividers for my wall of wool and yarn.

Here’s a peek at what the space looked like before we started renovations:
